CAM presents further exhibitions celebrating the centennial of Niagara State Park, including The Distinctive Charms of Niagara Scenery: Frederick Law Olmsted and the Niagara Reservation and Arcadia Revisited: Niagara River and Falls, from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, a Photo Essay by John Pfahl (see website). CAM also sponsors a documentary film by Florentine Films, Niagara Falls: The Changing nature of a New World Symbol. The film is broadcast on PBS and wins several awards.

Other CAM exhibitions include
Milton Rogovin: Lower West Side Buffalo. Recent additions to the collection include works by Jedd Garet, Arnold Mesches, David Salle, Keith Haring, Biff Henrich, Ellen Carey, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center presents a solo show by
Arnold Mesches: CAM purchases two works from the show.

The Guerrilla Girls,
"conscience of the art world," stage anonymous actions protesting racism and sexism in the art world.

Mikhail Gorbachev becomes general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party and introduces his perestroika and glasnost initiatives.
