Scott Richter's work reflects his fascination with "primitive"
objects, unusual materials, and abstract forms. Because of this
combination, works such as Iron Moon for Nelson (1988) hint
at subject matter rather than make blatant statements. The long
curved pendulum or "moon" suggests timeless ritual as
well as the passing of time, which is also implied by the presence
of newspapers. Richter's combination of universal forms with objects
from mass media implies his desire to address history on different
levels. This work was made in honor of South African president Nelson
Mandela, before his release from prison.
