Moda in New York City
is considered a historic marker for the East Village, New Wave,
and other alternative art scenes of the 80s.
In Buffalo,
Hallwalls
Contemporary Art Center and CEPA Gallery
move to 700 Main Street, where they will remain until 1994. Throughout
the 80s, exhibitions at these two spaces feature artists who go
on to international fame. The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University
will acquire work--including paintings by Arnold Mesches, from many
of these shows, as well as collaborate with them on joint exhibitions.
The
Whitney Museum
buys Jasper Johns' painting Three Flags for $1 million, the highest
amount paid to date for work by a living artist.
Ronald Reagan
is elected president.
