Pictures, curated by Douglas Crimp, opens at Artists' Space in New York, bringing national attention to the work of artists Robert Longo, Jack Goldstein, Sherrie Levine, and David Salle, all of whom had participated in exhibitions at Hallwalls in Buffalo, or actually--in the case of Longo--started their artistic carrer in Buffalo. Much of the work is based on mass media or appropriates found imagery.

The Treasures of Tutankhamen tours the U.S.; it is the first official "blockbuster" exhibition.

Walter De Maria installs the New York Earth Room in New York and The Lightning Field in New Mexico, and there is a comprehensive exhibition of Earth Art at the Hirschorn Museum in Washington, D.C.

The Alaskan Pipeline is completed.

William Gates and Paul Allen found Microsoft.
