Mass media

Many contemporary artists, starting famously with the Pop movement of the late 50s and 60s, have been concerned with the vast synthetic world of television and movies, advertisements and magazines. During the 70s, this preoccupation took the form of art which used imagery taken directly from these outlets in a way that was ironic, humorous, poignant, or politically-specific. These commentaries on the mass media narrative became their own narratives, couched in a language very familiar to the American public.
