of images of Niagara Falls

On Exhibit in France & Belgium
October 2002 to February 2003

Impressions exhibit On October 25, 2002, an exhibit of a selection of prints from the Charles Rand Penney collection of Niagara Falls opened in Lille, France. Penney's is the largest collection of prints and maps on this subject, private or public. From Hennepin's first image to a 1901 poster that celebrates the "Spirit of Niagara," his collection contains well over 700 images of the cataract, including almost every major print produced in America or Europe. Through a collaboration between Western New York's Burchfield-Penney Art Center and the Buffalo/Lille Association, a selection of some 100 works were on exhibit through December 25, 2002, at the Médiathèque municipale Jean Lévy in Lille. On January 10, 2003, the exhibit opened in Mouscron, Beligum. where it will be on exhibit until February 16 at the Centre Marius Staquet.

Impressions of Niagara The Penney Niagara Falls collection was first shown in the summer of 1993 at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University, in an exhibit curated by Christopher W. Lane, who worked closely with Mr. Penney in building this unequaled collection. The collection has also been fully documented by Lane in Impressions of Niagara (1993) and an Addendum and Corrigendum (2002). Lane was asked by Mr. Penney to curate the current European exhibit and to write a new catalogue, Impressions du Niagara, to accompany the exhibit. Lane selected prints that would present an overview of the Penney Collection, but with a particular emphasis on prints with a European viewpoint. The French language, color illustrated catalogue, Impressions du Niagara. A travers la collection du Dr Charles Rand Penney, has been wonderfully produced by Imprimerie Callens, Mouscron, and is listed for sale in our book shop.
